WHEN IT HAPPENS
By Rachel Causer
‘This was an awakening. This was an eruption. This was a revolution. This was like eating three Berocca with no water and letting them bubble inside you.’
A surreal and outrageous comedy following the lives of three women on what they thought would be a normal day of micro-aggressions and self-doubt.
Then it happens…
At 2.16pm, a strange phenomenon occurs and each woman experiences a transformation, breaking free from the roles they’ve been forced to play and starting a hilarious and heart-wrenching rebellion against everything and everyone who put them there in the first place.
The show debuted at the Maiden Speech festival in November 2018 and returned for a full run at Tristan Bates Theatre in July 2019 as part of Camden Fringe, where it was nominated for an Off West End award.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "This play is a manic tour de force performed by a hugely talented cast that is fifty five minutes or so of time well spent.
The script itself is totally brilliant and confounds expectations. I strongly recommend that you book your ticket and rush to get your own theatrical epiphany while you still can."
SPY IN THE STALLS
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "When It Happens had me in absolute hysterics in one moment and on the edge of my seat with suspense in the next. Totally outrageous and clever this show had me on side from the beginning. With an ensemble that works together so effortlessly, this slick and intelligent show is one for anyone who has ever felt unheard, pushed aside or just completely exhausted and are in need on a reset. I loved every minute.
WITHIN HER WORDS
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ "Causer and Bloomer are to be commended for this nuanced deconstruction of womanhood and the multitude of emotions that women experience in everyday life. The emotionally-astute observations, coupled with engaging performances, make for an entertaining and insightful combination."
BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I wrote a note at the end of the performance — “this sh*t is 5 star”, and while I don’t feel it needs any further explanation than that, I will expand. Every aspect of this tumultuous, engaging, relatable and emotive performance was expertly arranged and masterfully played. Never has a set of words from someone’s mouth made me feel so seen, so comforted and so liberated. When It Happens excellently reflects what theatre should always aim to be.
